The reason for this is that you are required to agree upfront to forfeiting the 30% federal tax credit as well as any other financial incentives to the leasing company. The 30% federal tax credit on a typical 6 kW solar system is about $10,000.00 at the leasing companies much higher pricing. The solar leasing salesperson will tell you that your incentives will be used to reduce the cost of your system, thus reducing your monthly lease payments but the leasing company's pricing is so high to begin with, that you'll actually end up paying a much higher price than what you would have paid if you purchased your system instead.
